In 2001, The Rev. Dr. Michael A. Milton was called as the pastor of the historic First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga, Tennessee, the twelfth in 161 years. Linking to the past radio and television ministries, Milton formed a new ministry, Faith for Living which continues as a muti media ministry of that church. After accepting the call to RTS, a new multi media ministry, The Call with Mike Milton was formed which broadcasts on radio in select markets in the US. The ministry also archives the sermons of Mike Milton and provides a platform for a daily blog called Mind and Heart.
Dr. Milton is the author of the book, Leaving a Career to Follow a Call: A Vocational Guide to the Ordained Ministry, Authentic Christianity and the Life of Freedom, Demands of Discipleship, O The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus: Expositions from John 17, Following Ben, Giving as an Act of Worship, Cooperation without Compromise, Hit by Friendly Fire: What to Do When You are Hurt by Other Believers as well as numerous popular and academic articles and published sermons in such periodicals as Preaching Magazine, The Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, The Christian Observer and World Magazine. He has been featured on national radio and television programs such as Truths that Transform with Dr. D. James Kennedy, The Coral Ridge Hour, and Moody Radio’s Money Matters. He recently provided a chapter in Hope Fulfilled: Essays in Honor of O. Palmer Robertson.
In September 2007 the book, What God Starts, God Completes is released about his life, available from the publisher, Christian Focus Publications or through Mind and Heart Bookstore, the online Bookstore of Reformed Theological Seminary. Two books are awaiting release: What is the Perseverance of the Saints? (P & R Publishing) and A Theology of Mincemeat Pie: Discovering God’s Grace in Everyday Ways (P & R Publishing).
Prior to becoming Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga, Dr. Milton served 16 years in the business world and was also a top secret Navy linguist. He completed his pastoral internship under D. James Kennedy at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church and after graduating from seminary, planted two churches: Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Overland Park, Kansas; and Kirk O’ the Isles Church in Savannah, Georgia. He also founded Westminster Academy Christian School in Overland Park and was the administrative head and a professor at Knox Theological Seminary. A graduate of The Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, Mid America Nazarene University (Kansas) and Knox Theological Seminary, in 1998 he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in theology and religious studies from The University of Wales (UK).
Dr. Milton’s personal story of moving from orphan and prodigal son to understanding God’s grace and receiving His adoption through Jesus Christ forms a frequent motif for offering Christ’s healing to a broken generation. Often his sermons are illustrated with songs that he writes, sings, and performs with guitar. In December 2005, a CD of original songs, which he recorded, “He Shall Restore,” was released by Music for Missions label. A second recording project, Follow Your Call, is presently scheduled for Winter 2008.
In addition to his pastoral work, Dr. Milton holds a commission in the US Army Reserves as a chaplain, a ministry that he continues, serving in the Chief of Chaplain’s Office, Washington DC. Serving on several boards and active in a number of civic organizations, he also remains involved in preaching and teaching in churches, conferences, and seminaries. Dr. and Mrs. Milton reside with their son in the Charlotte area.
